Congratulations to our 2016 achievement winners:  the Migler Family!   Migler’s were selected for the 2016 Pierce County SCD Achievement Award for their accomplishments and their contributions to conservation.   The Migler’s operate a 4th generation farm and ranch southwest of Rugby.  The Migler’s have used the EQIP program to plant cropland back to grass, fence, and water systems with solar to develop several rotational grazing systems. They use residue management techniques on all cropland acres. 2014 Achievement Award Winners:  The Ostrem Family
The Ostrem family enjoys experimenting and learning new realms within good conservation practices, including organic production and certification, implementing use of a high tunnel, even trying unusual tree plantings such as Larch and Apricot. Since 1921, each generation of the Ostrem family farm has planted a portion of farmstead windbreaks, which now totals 7 acres! They realize that experiments leave some failures, and education is always a costly investment, but they’ve enjoyed the privilege of being good stewards of the land for generations.
Congratulations to Mark, Jennifer and their three children Andrew, Anna and Elisabeth. The district will hold a banquet in their honor later this winter. Ostrems will also be attending the North
Dakota Association of Soil Conservation Dis-tricts Convention in Bismarck in No-vember where they will receive a 12x16 picture of their farm, and be recognized as the Pierce County winner.

2014 Tree Maintenance Award Winner:  Blaine & Susan Schmaltz
Blaine & Susan Schmaltz have been chosen as the 2014 Tree Maintenance Award win-ners. The Pierce County Soil Conservation District recognizes good stewards of tree plantings each year. Just driving past the Schmaltz’s farm, you will notice the well-maintained tree rows. Maintenance includes upkeep of weed fabric, keeping between-rows free of weeds, and re-planting of dead or dying trees. Schmaltz’s will be honored later in the year by the District for their wonderful tree accomplishment. Congratulations, Blaine and Susan!
